Two days after Obama’s re-election as  President of the United States, thereby sparing the country from Romney’s potentially disastrous and alienating policies, we left the El Centro, California, campground/ resort just as a rather vicious sand storm blew up out of nowhere and set upon us, kicking up huge clouds of swirling dust.  Dust everywhere, all following us out  of town.

So began the long trek eastbound on California/Arizona interstate highway 8, also known as Kumeyaay Highway, named after the Native American people who first populated this vast desert area 12,000 years ago.  Ancient peoples.  It is hard to believe any people, no matter how hardy they may be, could eke out a living in such an unforgiving and harsh land.  But seeing these vast and limitless stretches of desert with no visible traces of life that I could see, gave way to a sense that if people could survive in this land, then they could survive anywhere.  Yes, ancient peoples.  Some archaeologists claim the oldest Native Americans date from 13,500 years ago, as evidenced by the “clovis points” (fluted spear points similar to arrowheads), discovered in 1929 and named after Clovis, New Mexico, located in the southeast corner of New Mexico.
